Genealogical research in Ternopil – search for ancestors and archival documents
Genealogical research of a family in the Ternopil region allows us to reconstruct the family history based on archival documents: identify ancestors, confirm intergenerational relationships, determine family residences, and reconstruct individual biographical facts. This research may include registers of various denominations, Austrian cadastral documents, censuses, civil registry records, military, judicial, and other archival sources.

The Ternopil region is a region with a diverse history: most of the region historically belonged to Galicia and was part of Austria for almost a century and a half, then Austria-Hungary, while the eastern regions (the environs of Kremenets) historically belonged to Volyn. A brief episode from 1809–1815 deserves special attention, when the Tarnopil district was part of the Russian Empire before being returned to Austria by decision of the Congress of Vienna. This diversity of national affiliations means that documents about a single family may be stored in archives in different countries.
Features of searching and selecting sources by confession
The main difficulty in the research stems from the region's changing national affiliation and, consequently, its official language—Latin, German, Polish, Church Slavonic, and Ukrainian. A single settlement could have had several historical names, and the eastern part of the region (the environs of Kremenets) requires separate consideration, as it gravitated toward Volyn rather than Galicia.
When preparing the research, the following are taken into account:
  • historical names of the settlement in different languages;
  • administrative affiliation in different periods;
  • povit, gmina, volost, and other territorial units;
  • religious affiliation of the family—Greek Catholic, Roman Catholic, or Jewish;
  • affiliation with the Galician or Volyn part of the region;
  • possible displacements and deportations of the family.

The Ternopil region has historically been a multi-confessional region. Greek Catholics constituted the majority of the Ukrainian population, Roman Catholics constituted the predominantly Polish population, and Jewish communities were particularly significant in Ternopil, Buchach, Zbarazh, Chortkiv, and Kremenets.
✓ Greek Catholic families. Parish registers record baptisms, marriages, and deaths, allowing us to establish family composition and relationships. Marriage records are especially valuable for tracing back generations.

✓ Roman Catholic families. It is important to determine the parish that served the locality, as not every village had its own church. If one of the spouses originated from another region, the search can be continued in the archives of modern-day Poland.

✓ Jewish families. Parish registers of Jewish communities and administrative documents are used. Small towns in the region (Buchach, Zbarazh, Chortkiv, Kremenets) were well-known Jewish shtetls, but a significant portion of pre-war documents have been lost or displaced, so the search often requires consulting multiple archives, including those located abroad.
What documents are used in the study
How the study is conducted
The work is based on consistent documentary confirmation of connections, not on a mere surname. First, all available information—family documents, photographs, letters—is analyzed to determine the last known point of investigation.

To identify an individual, the following are compared: parents' and spouse's names, age, place of residence and parish, social status, names of children, and other relatives mentioned in documents. Only after identity is confirmed does the document become the basis for moving to the previous generation.
This sequence is rarely linear: ages and names may differ in different documents, families may change their residence, and a new discovery may point to a different parish, region, or even country. If a connection cannot be documented, it is not replaced by conjecture - instead, alternative versions are recorded.
What does the client receive
The work typically involves establishing the full names of ancestors and spelling variations of surnames, dates and places of birth, marriage, and death, the names of parents and spouses, family composition at different periods, migration directions, religious affiliation, professions, and education. The results are documented with a description of the work performed, copies of the documents found, archival certificates, and extracts.
